چکیده

The sdB star KPD 0422+5421 was discovered to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of P = 0.0901795± (3×10) days (2 hours, 10 minutes). The U and B light curves display an ellipsoidal modulation with amplitudes of ≈ 0.02 magnitudes. The sdB star contributes nearly all of the observed flux. This and the absence of any reflection effect suggest that the unseen companion star is small (i.e. Rcomp ≈ 0.01R⊙) and therefore degenerate. We modeled the U and B light curves and derived i = 78.05±0.50 and a mass ratio of q = Mcomp/MsdB = 0.87±0.15. The sdB star fills 69% of its Roche lobe. These quantities may be combined with the mass function of the companion (f(M) = 0.126±0.028M⊙) to derive MsdB = 0.72±0.26M⊙ and Mcomp = 0.62 ± 0.18M⊙. We used model spectra to derive the effective temperature, surface gravity, and helium abundance of the sdB star. We found Teff = 25, 000 ± 1500 K, log g = 5.4 ± 0.1, and [He/H] = −1.0. With a period of 2 hours and 10 minutes, KPD 0422+5421 has one of the shortest known orbital periods of a detached binary. This system is also one of only a few known binaries which contain a subdwarf B star and a white dwarf. Thus KPD 0422+5421 represents a relatively unobserved, and short-lived, stage of binary star evolution.

Confirmation of Eclipses in KPD 0422+5421, A Binary Containing a White Dwarf and a Subdwarf B Star

We report additional photometric CCD observations of KPD 0422+5421, a binary with an orbital period of 2.16 hours which contains a subdwarf B star (sdB) and a white dwarf. There are two main results of this work. First, the light curve of KPD 0422+5421 contains two distinct periodic signals, the 2.16 hour ellipsoidal modulation discovered by Koen, Orosz, & Wade (1998) and an additional modulati...

Photometry of four binary subdwarf B stars and the nature of their unseen companion stars

We present lightcurves of four binary subdwarf B stars, Ton 245, Feige 11, PG1432+159 and PG1017−086. We also present new spectroscopic data for PG1017−086 from which we derive its orbital period, P = 0.073d, and the mass function, fm = 0.0010±0.0002M⊙. This is the shortest period for an sdB binary measured to-date. The values of P and fm for the other sdB binaries have been published elsewhere...

A new period for the magnetic white dwarf KPD 0253 + 5052

We present phaseresolved circular polarization measurements of the rotating magnetic white dwarf KPD 0253+5052. A new and more accurate period of (3.79 ± 0.05) h for KPD 0253+5052 could be determined by measuring the broadband polarization in the Hβ and Hγ lines derived from medium resolution (about 5 ˚ A FWHM) spectropolarimetric data at different phases.

On The Origin Of Subdwarf B Stars and Related Metal-Rich Binaries

Mounting evidence from subdwarf B (sdB) stars in the galactic field and their recently discovered counterparts in old open clusters indicates that at least two thirds of local disk sdB stars are binaries. Our recent radial velocity survey showed that sdB binaries naturally divide into two groups with contrasting spectroscopic and kinematic properties. Those with detectable spectral lines from a...

This is an author produced version of The OmegaWhite Survey for Short-period Variable Stars. V. Discovery of an Ultracompact Hot Subdwarf Binary with a Compact Companion in a 44-minute Orbit

We report the discovery of the ultracompact hot subdwarf (sdOB) binary OW J074106.0–294811.0 with an orbital period of P 44.66279 1.16 10 orb 4 =  ́ minutes, making it the most compact hot subdwarf binary known. Spectroscopic observations using the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes revealed a He-sdOB primary with an intermediate helium abundance, Teff = 39 400 500  K and g log = 5.74±0.09. Hi...
